GPS by SMS: beyond mobile data
Why SMS matters—and why a mobile signal still matters.
One device, two different jobs
A tracker can calculate a position without successfully sending that position to your phone. Satellite reception and mobile communication are different parts of the system. This matters when you are waiting for a vehicle update and the last location on the screen looks old.
Claritas installs vehicle GPS systems that use SMS commands. Supported functions depend on the selected hardware, SIM, installation and configuration. An SMS-based option is not a promise of operation without cellular coverage.

Does “no internet” mean “no network”?
No. A device may support SMS without an active mobile-data session, but SMS still needs a working cellular service, a suitable active SIM and an available messaging route. Coverage, power, account status and device compatibility can prevent or delay communication. A location fix does not prove the message reached its recipient.
GPS.gov explains factors affecting GPS reception and accuracy. Separately, Twilio distinguishes sent and delivered messaging states. These references explain the distinction; they do not identify the hardware or messaging provider in a Claritas installation.
What to check at handover
- Confirm who is authorized to request location or device actions.
- Test an ordinary location request in representative operating conditions.
- Check the timestamp, not just the map marker.
- Record who maintains the SIM, device power and access list.
- Agree how to report an unresponsive device without repeatedly sending commands.
Treat immobilization as a separate decision
Some installations support authorized immobilization. It requires compatible equipment, a qualified installation and an agreed safe operating procedure. This article does not provide shutdown commands or instructions for stopping a moving vehicle. Location visibility, command delivery and confirmation of a device action are separate checks. Discuss the vehicle and intended use with Claritas before selecting a system; no tracker guarantees theft prevention or recovery.
